Dermatology Links

Listed below are some of the links which Dr. Angeloni thinks are most useful. He weeded through a lot of crummy dermatology sites, so you won't have to.

American Academy of Dermatology - this is the site of the AAD, the major dermatologic organization in the US. Lots of information regarding dermatology, dermatologists, and lots of brochures and information. A VERY useful site. Look here for the American Academy of Dermatology, Foundations, Institutes and Support Groups page - a great source for finding support groups (for albinism, alopecia areata, rosacea, psoriasis, etc). Also lists addresses of national foundations and web sites for many of the foundations/institutes.

American Academy of Derm Patient Info Section - an excellent area to get basic information pamphlets on common dermatologic disorders. (Scabies, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, hair loss, tanning, etc). The pamphlets on skin cancer and moles are very good. Highly recommended.

Archives of Dermatology - one of the major dermatology journals. You can search the last several years of articles, but, unless you're a member you'll only be able to read the abstracts, not the full articles.

Daily Ultraviolet Index - this is updated every day (well, duh!), giving you the UV index for the next day. A good place to look before you go boating, etc. Of course, you are putting sunscreen on every day, so this isn't so critical, right?

Dept. of Dermatology, University of Iowa - lots of useful information to be found here including an photos (see below), support group information, and info regarding the U of I dermatology program.

Dermatology Images, University of Iowa - a very extensive collection of digital images with links to patient information sources. The quality of the pictures is variable with many showing soft focus and a somewhat unnatural color cast. A decent site to look at different types of skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma), but there are other sites with better pictures (Dermatology Online Atlas from Erlangen stands out... see below)

Dermatology Online Journal - a very good online journal which is actually indexed in the Index Medicus (and should show up on MEDLINE).

Dermatology Online Atlas (Erlangen) - from the University of Erlangen (Germany), this site has one of the premier photo collections which you can access. Really superlative digital images, and a decent interface. Also, each category has thumbnails of numerous examples. Links from the pictures will take you directly to MEDLINE, an online database which can search the medical literature back to 1966. This will give you lots of medical references, but little in the way of easily accessible information.

Electronic Textbook of Dermatology - you will find this referenced in several web pages and search engines, but the quality of information here is variable. Some of the chapters are decent, others are poor and way out of date. For example, the chapter on scabies still recommends Kwell (lindane) as a treatment, which is not really used much today, since there is a much safer alternative.

Eczema - a support group for patients with eczema.

Internet Dermatology Society ( http://telemedicine.org/)

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology - another major dermatology journal with searchable abstracts for about the last 5-6 years worth of articles.

Living with Lupus - National Lupus Foundation. Basic information regarding lupus.

National alopecia areata - lots of useful information regarding this disorder including ongoing research studies that are recruiting volunteers (blood for genetic studies). Also lots of links to other hair related sites, and support groups. There is a FAQ link regarding alopecia areata.

National Psoriasis Foundation Web Page - a superb site for everything you need to know about psoriasis, click on the "Index" button to access patient information. Warning - read privacy policy - several patients who joined to get the newsletter have received phone solicitations regarding psoriasis treatments!

National Rosacea Society - contains past issues of newsletter with lots of good information about rosacea.

Online Medelian Inheritance in man - a searchable online database for genetic diseases/disorders. For inherited diseases like epidermolysis bullosa, or neurofibromatosis. Gives clinical information and findings in these disorders as well as the most current genetic data (which won't mean much if you haven't picked up a genetics textbook in 10 years).

Poison Ivy Info - a nice site with pictures and information regarding this pesky plant. Worth looking at before the spring thaw!

Society for Investigative Dermatology - one of the most cited journals in Dermatology. A lot of cutting edge research can be found here, but you can only view abstracts and the majority of the articles are pretty intense (highly oriented toward basic science and sophisticated research...not for the faint of heart, and not a tremendous amount of clinical information here).

SkinCare Physicians - acne, eczema, melanoma, and psoriasis are found here.

Skin Cancer and Benign tumor image atlas (Chicago, Loyola Univ) - a good place to look for skin cancer pictures

Skinema - this is a fascinating site! here you'll find skin conditions as represented in the cinema and pages of pictures of skin conditions that your favorite celebrity might have. Ricky Martin has acne scars? You can still be famous even with a mole on your face - this site has dozens of famous actors and actresses with moles, in various locations...

Vitiligo - patient support group for patients with vitiligo

WebMD - has a lot of general medical information and also some dermatology information.
